Guidant Implanted Defibrillators Health Risks
Even though Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators are some of the safest and widely trusted medical devices in the world today, they are still foreign objects inside the human body. Natural defenses and allergies can turn even relatively benign materials as surgical grade plastic and rubber into sources of potential discomfort and even death. Infection is always a risk in any type of surgery, and ICD procedures are no exception. Frequently reported postoperative complications that require immediate medical attention include:
- The area around the incision becomes red, swollen, hot or painful
- The edges of the incision bleed or become filled with pus
- Any tearing of the sutures or staples or skin separation
- Fever or chills
- Skin irritation or degeneration
- Painful or uncomfortable impulses from the ICD
These conditions are symptoms of a larger problem with your surgery or device and should be reported immediately to your doctor. With enough advance warning, they can be addressed before they turn a simple reaction into life-threatening situation.
