Guidant Contak TR Pacemaker

Guidant Corporation issued a voluntary recall on July 19, 2005 of a number of its popular CONTAK TR (including the Guidant Contak TR 1241 model) pacemakers due to a potentially fatal manufacturing defect. The CONTAK TR belongs to a group of 18,000 similar devices manufactured between 1997 and 2000 that may have faulty hermetic seals which allow excess moisture to leak into the device and render them useless. There have already been 69 reports of failure of this seal in these devices including one fatality possibly caused by the defect, although that link is still under investigation.

There is little margin for error in the design and manufacture of pacemakers because they are critically important for people with weak or damaged hearts. Pacemakers provide electrical “encouragement” to insure proper heartbeat, for without proper heart rate the blood cannot provide oxygen to the diverse tissues throughout the body. Fainting, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, and shortness of breath are all common signs of poor circulation, and patients with CONTAK TR pacemakers should report these symptoms to their doctor immediately.
